privacy policy

what this policy covers

this privacy policy explains how note to self ("the app", "we", "us", "our") handles your information. by using the app, you agree to the practices described here.

data we collect

none.

we do not collect, transmit, store, or process any personal data on any server we own or operate. we do not have servers. we do not have accounts. we do not have analytics. we do not use third-party SDKs that collect data. we do not track you.

data that stays on your device

everything you write in note to self — your notes, your replies, your scores, your settings — is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework.

your note content and reply text are encrypted on-device using AES-GCM (256-bit) before being written to storage. the encryption key is stored in your device's Keychain.

iCloud sync

if you have iCloud enabled, your encrypted data may sync to your private iCloud account via Apple's CloudKit framework. this sync is between your own devices, through your own Apple ID, using Apple's infrastructure.

we cannot access your iCloud data. we do not operate the sync infrastructure. Apple's iCloud terms and privacy policy govern this sync.

for maximum protection, enable Advanced Data Protection in your iCloud settings, which makes your iCloud data end-to-end encrypted.

your encryption key syncs via iCloud Keychain (Apple's end-to-end encrypted keychain service). we never see this key.

notifications

the app uses Apple's local notification system to deliver your notes back to you. notification scheduling happens entirely on your device. no notification data is sent to us or any third party.

notification permissions are requested through Apple's standard system prompt.

crisis resources

the app includes a bundled list of crisis hotline numbers sourced from public directories. your device's locale setting (not your GPS location) is used to show regionally relevant resources. no location data is collected or transmitted.

children's privacy

note to self is not directed at children under 17. we do not knowingly collect any information from anyone of any age, as we collect no information at all. the app carries a 17+ age rating on the App Store due to the nature of its content.

third-party services

the app does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or data collection services.

the only external services involved are Apple's own platform services (CloudKit, iCloud Keychain, notifications), which are governed by Apple's privacy policy.

on-device machine learning

on supported devices (iPhone 15 Pro and later), the app may use Apple's on-device FoundationModels framework to classify note content and detect crisis language. this processing happens entirely on your device. no data is sent to any server — not ours, not Apple's — for this purpose. on unsupported devices, a rule-based classifier is used instead.

data retention and deletion

since all data is stored on your device and your iCloud account, you have full control over it at all times.

to delete all data: delete the app. this removes all local data. to also remove iCloud-synced data, go to Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Storage and remove the app's data.

european users (GDPR)

since we do not collect, process, or store any personal data, the General Data Protection Regulation's requirements regarding data processing are not applicable to our operations. there is no data controller or data processor relationship between you and us, because no data flows to us.

your data resides solely on your device and, optionally, in your own iCloud account under Apple's data processing terms.

california users (CCPA)

we do not sell personal information. we do not share personal information. we do not collect personal information. there is no information to request, delete, or opt out of, because none exists on our end.

UK users (UK GDPR)

the same position as GDPR above applies. we process no personal data. the app operates entirely on-device with optional sync through your own Apple iCloud account.

changes to this policy

if we update this policy, the updated version will be included in an app update. the "last updated" date at the top will change. continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
