by downloading, installing, or using note to self ("the app"), you agree to these terms of use. if you do not agree, do not use the app.
note to self is a personal self-reflection tool. you write notes to yourself; the app delivers them back to you as notifications at times chosen by an on-device algorithm. the app is designed for private, individual use.
note to self is not a medical device, therapy tool, counselling service, crisis intervention service, or substitute for professional mental health care.
the app does not provide medical advice, psychological advice, diagnosis, or treatment of any kind. it does not monitor your mental health. it does not assess your wellbeing. it does not generate, suggest, or recommend content.
if you are experiencing a mental health crisis, suicidal thoughts, or thoughts of self-harm, please contact emergency services or a crisis helpline immediately. the crisis resources included in the app are provided for convenience only and are sourced from public directories — we do not operate, endorse, or guarantee the availability of any listed service.
you retain full ownership of everything you write in the app. we never see, access, read, or store your content. your notes and replies exist only on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own iCloud account.
you are solely responsible for the content you write. the app does not moderate, review, or edit your notes beyond the on-device safety filter, which exists solely to surface crisis resources when explicit self-harm language is detected.
the app includes an on-device content filter that attempts to detect explicit suicide or self-harm ideation. when triggered, it surfaces crisis resources and does not save the note. this filter:
— runs entirely on your device. no content is transmitted anywhere.
— is not a clinical assessment. it uses pattern matching and, on supported devices, on-device machine learning.
— may produce false positives (flagging safe content) or false negatives (missing harmful content).
— is not a substitute for professional crisis intervention.
— does not contact emergency services or any third party on your behalf.
you should not rely on this filter for your safety or the safety of others.
the app is for personal self-reflection. you agree not to use it for any unlawful purpose. you acknowledge that the app delivers your own words back to you, and that you are responsible for what you write.
note to self is a one-time paid purchase through the Apple App Store. there are no in-app purchases, subscriptions, or recurring charges. refunds are handled by Apple according to their App Store refund policy.
we may update, modify, or discontinue the app at any time without notice. we do not guarantee uninterrupted availability. app updates may be delivered through the App Store and may modify features or functionality.
because all data is stored locally on your device (and optionally synced via your iCloud), we are not responsible for any data loss due to device failure, software malfunction, iOS updates, accidental deletion, or any other cause. we do not have access to your data and cannot recover it.
the app is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
we do not warrant that the app will be error-free, uninterrupted, secure, or free of harmful components. we do not warrant the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of the on-device safety filter, notification scheduling, or any other feature.
to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the developer, its officers, employees, agents, or affiliates be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, emotional distress, personal injury, or damages arising from:
— your use of or inability to use the app
— any content you write in the app
— the timing, delivery, or non-delivery of notifications
— the safety filter failing to detect harmful content, or incorrectly flagging safe content
— reliance on crisis resources listed in the app
— data loss or corruption
— any action you take or fail to take based on a notification from the app
in jurisdictions that do not allow the exclusion or limitation of liability for consequential or incidental damages, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.
in no event shall our total liability exceed the amount you paid for the app.
you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the developer from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including legal fees) arising from your use of the app, your violation of these terms, or your violation of any rights of a third party.
these terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. any disputes arising from these terms or the use of the app shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
if you are a consumer in the European Union, you retain any mandatory consumer protection rights granted to you under the laws of your country of residence.
if any provision of these terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.
we may update these terms from time to time. the updated version will be included in an app update. the "last updated" date at the top will change. continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
